Labor Day Weekend (& After)

Saturday: Came home from work to find the water heater tank leaking water. Thankfully, clear instructions on how to close down the pipes to tank was posted on the tank. And, thankfully, we found a handyman who was still working and had the part that needed to be replace. Saw fireworks.

Sunday: Was a lazy bum and just took naps or watched TV. Watched Broken Saints. Interesting comic. Graphically ok but much more interesting storywise. Took Hachi with me to return DVDs. Too hot outside. Quickly drove back home.

Monday: Washed loads and loads of laundry. Threw out tons of trash (aka stuff that I thought I needed years before but not interested in keeping now, ex. papers). Washed dishes. Played with Hachi. Ate dinner w/ Junko & Ming. Then went back home to watch the remainder of the whole day re-runs of Dark Angel. For some reason, I am fascinated with mutant-related stuff.

Tuesday: Went back to work. Got news that my sideview mirrors have arrived!!! Yes!!! I'm getting sick of re-taping the damn mirrors to make sure they don't fall off while I'm driving.

Fireworks

For some reason, someone was lighting up fireworks in the area behind the houses across the street from us. It was Hachi's 1st firework viewing.

Behind the Mona Lisa's Smile

Saw the re-run on WE channel last night/early this morning. It made me think about how we make the right decisions for ourselves. I'm not just talking about big, life-changing decisions; this also concerns the little ones that we make every day. Should I become a doctor? Or should I be a secretary? Should I eat hamburger, fries and shake, or should I stick to salads to lose weight? What would people think of me? What is better for me in the long run? What is everybody else doing? What do I want?

Trying to make the right decision is such a headache. Who says we need to make the right one? Just make one, right? But I hate being wrong or looking stupid or having people pity me. Me and my stupid pride. Sometimes, it'd be easier to make decisions based on what I want. But I know from experience that what I want at that moment doesn't mean I'll still want it in the next moment. What makes it harder is that some moments are instantaneous and some last years. I want permanence; yet, at times, I crave to have the opposite.

Am I changing, have I been changing? Or have I been standing still in one place for a long, long time?

How much to sacrifice and how much to keep? Give and take, teach and learn, catabolism and anabolism. C'est la vie.

Let's see where life takes me.

I have this memory of my grandmother trying to read my palm but it confused her so. She didn't know what to make of it.

I just really, really, really don't want to end up as a bum on the street or living in a trailer park.

Project Runway, Season 3

Episode 1: Apartment Raid
Not surprised Stacy was voted to leave. She didn't know how to use the sewing machine and had problems . I loved Michael's white fluttery dress made from coffee filters.

Episode 2: Fit for a Queen
Challenge: Working in grps of 2. Malan got kicked out. For what reason, I don't remember.

Episode 3: Designer's Best Friend
Bradley's in trouble in this episode but he manages to skim into the next challenge by the hair of his chinny chin chin. Unfortunately, I don't understand why the judges thought Katherine should go. Her design was a bit on the simpler side but it was still adorable. I'm so surprised Angela & Vincent haven't been let go yet, especially Angela. So, I guess the lesson to be learned so far is that if your design is uninspiring and poorly constructed, it's a definite disqualifier; more than leaving the hems undone. I really like Alison Kelly, the dresses she designs and what she wears. It's so stylish. I also like the designs done by Uli, Laura, Michael, and Keith. The rest are ok. But I don't like Angela's stuff. Alison's design was very mod. The expression on Alison's face was very memorable when she heard that Uli was the winner for this challenge; it was very "What?! How could she have won? Mine was better vs hers" look. Uli's design (cheetah pattern lining another brown patterned fabric) was definitely more everyday wearable than Alison's (white jacket & dress w/ black tights & heels). Oh yeah, Vera Wang & Ivanka Trump were 2 of the 4 judges.

Episode 4: Designing a 3-pc outfit for INC
Challenge: working in grps of 3. What a surprise, Angela was chosen as 1 of the 4 team leaders. Last time she worked under Vincent and they came to heads; in the end, Angela didn't work on the dress at all since Vincent wouldn't let her touch it. Now, people are dreading that she would pick them to be on her team. The other team leaders are Keith (Alison & Jeffrey), Robert (Vincent & Kayne), and Bonnie (Uli & Bradley). Angela's teammates were Michael & Laura. Woo, now it looks like somebody's going to get kicked off the show Apparently, Keith has patternbooks & how-to books in his room & the contest rules stated that it is an immediate disqualification to have "helpers" like this. I wonder what's going to happen to Alison & Jeffrey if Keith gets kicked off.

Wicked-licious

I was so deliriously happy yesterday. Finally got to see Wicked live at the San Diego Civic Theatre. It was great, wonderful, spectacular, etc!!! BUT. I've listened to the soundtrack so many times and it was the original cast who sang the soundtrack. So I was kind of disappointed when the singing was not as rich & powerful. Both Glinda's and Elphaba's singing were on the nasal side. And at times when I was expecting them to be belting out their parts, their voices seem to lose power and I could barely hear them. Maybe I was sitting too far back and to the side (M56). But there were a few times in the performance when I felt I was left out in the cold. And Fiyero's dancing in "Dancing Through Life" seemed stiff, not carefree.

But, on the plus side, seeing the actors play out the story really helps fill in the blanks in the soundtrack which consists of music only & not dialogue. And the guy playing the Wizard sang & acted pretty decent. Overall, the acting was good, especially Glinda who was hilariously funny.

One thing that stood out for me in this performance was when Glinda sang "I'm Not That Girl" and she growls on that last low note. This little twist isn't in the soundtrack. That growly low note so represents the mood she's in after Fiyero leaves with Elphaba, and right before she betrays Elphaba to the Wizard & Madame Morrible.

Oh, and I shouldn't forget the costumes. My god, I wanted to take photos so badly, especially the outfits for the ball scene and the trip to the Emerald City.

I decided to check out if I was the only one who felt this way about the performance so I found Anne Marie Welsh's review on SignOnSanDiego. She pretty much said what I felt about the performance too. This is definitely a gotta-see show. In February 2007, there's going to be another Wicked production in Los Angeles but with a different cast, I think. Or, go to New York to see it.

::Sigh. I really wished I found out about this musical when it first came out. Judging from the soundtrack, the original cast would've been a great act to see and hear.

P.S. The guy who plays Fiyero (Sebastian Arcello) is cute! =P

What I Want List

Since I didn't keep a list of all the stuff I wanted over the years, I've forgotten about them. Well, I'm going to start making a list as of now to see what stuff I actually really do want (aka still desire months from now) from stuff that I wanted b/c of a whim. Maybe this will be a mistake; then again, maybe not.

1) Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (all episodes in one case)
2) Cowboy Bebop (whole set)
3) Neon Genesis Evangelion (whole set)

Web Definitions of "Vicarious"

1) experienced at secondhand; "read about mountain climbing and felt vicarious excitement"

4) to take a place of another as a substitution. Jesus took the place of sinners place vicariously on the cross. Mt.20:28
5) relating to a state of being or an action which is undertaken on behalf of others, usually referring to the humanity or the death of Jesus Christ.

Back Again

Wow. Haven't visited my blog site since 2003. Actually, this is a new site since I forgot the ID & password to my old site. Just saw Project Runway 3, episode 3. Am hooked on this show. I should design my own clothes to save money. Problem is, I don't know how to sew much less how to construct a garment. Something else to learn. Yay!! Am looking forward to it.

SD Comi-Con 2006 was a bit disappointing compared to last year. Did buy some stuff that I've been hankering after. Debating whether I should go next year or not. We'll see. Fun part this year was hanging out with jmp, trouz, rick, & timmy and meeting new friends.

lol =D

Princess is such a riot. During dinner today, she was wandering around the table as always, looking for someone to take pity on her & give her some food. But today, she passed by the kitchen glass door & noticed that another dog was looking at her. She paused & stared back. She lowered her head. So did the other dog. She raised her right foot. The other dog did the same. She moved several times, keeping her eyes on the other dog. The other dog repeated her gestures at exactly the same time. Finally, irritated, she started growling/barking softly at the other dog. After a few seconds, she lost interest & decided to ignore the strange dog. She went back to wandering underneath the table but she couldn't get the strange dog out of her mind. She went back to the kitchen door again. Again, the dog was there, staring right back at her. Losing her temper, she barked much louder this time & started jumping around. She smacked her head against the chair leg, yelped, and ran to her bed. From her bed, she craned her neck to see if the strange dog was standing outside. My dad tried to show her that it was nothing, just her reflection. But she ignored him and craned her neck to look around his crouching figure. Finally, my dad just closed the curtain, telling her, "Look, the dog's gone. You can come out now."

Gad darn it! I wanted to go to Express at 6 am today b/c they were giving away free cashmere scarfs with any purchase. Problem was, I slept through my alarm and didn't wake up until 7:30 am. Then I only had time to take a shower before leaving for work. {Sulk} Even Princess doesn't want to play with me. She'd rather gnaw on her bone. Pthhh! Whatever. Can't wait until Sunday. Going manga shopping & Xmas present shopping. Whoohoo!!

LOL! Watching Princess is very entertaining. Earlier today, she had been chewing on her Nylabone. This went on for several minutes. Then she sat up in her sleeping box, looked at the blanket lining her box, and started pawing-scratching at it. My first thought was, "What?! She's showing another feline trait. First, she bats her front paws in the air. Now she's doing the scratching action cats do on furnitures." Meanwhile, after a few scratches and sniffing accompanied by a contemplative study of her blue blanket, she heaved her bone over the side of her box into her water bowl which was located next to her bed.

Later tonight, she pawed at her blanket again after she chewed on her bone. Suddenly, 'ding', the lightbulb went on. I realized she was trying to dig a hole in her box so she could bury her bone in there for later gnawing. I'm glad she's not turning into a cat after all. =P

busy, busy, busy. scarfing down my lunch now in the few minutes i have.

princess is looking at me with pitiful eyes.

with great effort, i ignore her and keep on eating.

unfortunately, i have to be a bitch re: feeding her human food b/c of her being sick recently. she's getting better but she's still on antibiotics. we still don't know how detrimental her 4-wk bout of illness (diarrhea, vomitting, lack of appetite) was to her health. she had been 3 lbs prior to her illness but she quickly dropped down to 1.8 lbs. her health is improving now and her weight has risen to 2.16 lbs as of yesterday. even though she seems much, much better, my memory of her seizures as well as the medical bill from the vet keeps me from giving in to her begging.

she makes a small, pitiful sniff-cry and crawls back into her bed, her back facing us.

{Sigh} I'll give her some luvin' later to make up.

Wow, blogger's got a new look. Haven't been here in a few months. Anyways, just making my presence known again. I've been very, very busy the last few months. I've been:

1) Taking copyediting classes to get the certificate.

2) Volunteering for a real estate magazine. I've written my first article for the mag which will be published in the January edition. Yes!!! My very first published work! Heh heh!!

3) Taking a Japanese class just this quarter. I don't know if I'll take more classes. Depends on time and money.

4) Taking care of my brother's puppy who was very, very sick for a time & was on the verge of dying. Not kidding about this. She had about 2 seizures & 2 near-seizures. Freaked us out so much that my parents and I kept on waking up in the middle of the night to check up on her. Those two weeks were hellish, I tell you. Now she's much better and eating by herself. Actually, gobbling is more like it.

5) Tutoring middle school kids in English writing. Just started. Hope I get more clients. Had to review my own middle school work to remember what I did then.

Ummm, that's all I can think up of now. Was up late studying last night b/c Japanese class is about to end and I have to hurry up and memorize the vocab & grammar b4 the final. Two classes left. Head kinda fuzzy, even with the two cups of coffee I glubbed down this morning.

Oh yeah,

6) Reading "The Virgin Blue" which is written by the same author of "The Girl with a Pearl Earring." An interesting read. Mix of history and mystery as well as a smattering of romance.

7) Watching "Angel" on Wednesday nights. Had to give up "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" b/c currently too busy at the moment.

Need to get back to work now. {Sigh}

just got an email from a friend, "amy". she's upset over somebody commenting that she resembled Monica Lewinsky. this is the third person who's said that to her since that Clinton-Lewinsky scandal broke out. the comments stopped when the scandal died down. now that ML's getting her own reality tv show, it seems that the comments are starting again. i wonder why these people would say that amy looked like ML. i've known her for years and she does not look like ML at all. just b/c she has brown hair, brown eyes, pale skin, and a full figure doesn't mean she looks like ML. and who would want to be associated with that woman? her brand of popularity, or should i say 'notoriety', is not a good thing for an average, everyday person to be associated with. one thing most of us know very well is that human beings have this tendency of associating things into categories. i know i'm guilty of it. i've seen other people do it too. but sometimes, these associations tend to be superficial and can be detrimental in various degrees. don't go around telling women that they look like ML. it's not a compliment. what ML wants to do, that's her choice. but when you're associating other women with ML, it's like you're associating them (albeit indirectly) with ML's actions.

feel a bit sad today. can't call my friend who lives in another town that's too far away to just drive there to see her. and can't phone her b/c the fricking phone bill from last month was too steep. guess i can email her but getting a response is like bullet time in the Matrix: Hhhheeeeyyyyyyy! Wwwhhhhhhhhaaaaaaatttttt''''sssss uuuupppp, gggiiiiirrrrrllllfffffrrrriiiieeennndddd?????. sometimes, email just doesn't satisfy the need to have quick response back to one's conversation. granted, there's aim, msn messenger, and a host of other free programs i can d/l to quickly talk to her & not get charged such a stiff fee. but she's not on the comp all the time. what to do? what to do? i guess i'll just go visit her website.
- S, 3:48 PM

i love the internet. no extra phone line needed. you can screen the stuff that's being sent to you, unlike fax machines.

Scientists Fabricate Pliable Electonic Display
looks interesting. will definitely be more portable and less back-breaking than the huge tomes that have to be lugged around in high school & college (depending on your classes). but one shouldn't just discard printed matter for new tech w/o some regrets. look at some of the benefits they provide:

1) use as doorstop (these new tech stuff are just not thick or heavy enough to keep the doors open)
2) use as stool
3) getting high off of the smell of ink & the feel of the paper texture (yep, i admit it. i'm a bibliophile & i'm proud of it. =P)
4) don't get dizzy after reading for a while, like i do when i have to scroll down an extremely looooonnnggg page

don't get my wrong. i love computers and new techs and stuff. but i love them for reasons that are different from the ones i have for loving books.

i fervently hope that printed matter will never become obsolete. it's an art form that should be continued despite the new tech that are being created as we speak.

current blogs i'm reading:
http://www.aflightrisk.blogspot.com/ => saw a link to this on the Wired e-zine site. won't comment on whether this is true or fictional. haven't finished reading all the entries yet. just started yesterday.
http://www.coherenceengine.com/blog/index.html => just finished an intro to CS class; yeah! i understand some of what this guy's saying; the class paid off =)

hmmm....
nothing to say now that i've got my own blog. this is still too new for me, writing posted stuff on the web. usually i just read other people's comments and comment on their comments. reactive vs proactive. vicarious vs living my life as i would like to.
guess that's why i'm so into movies and books. saw X2 last saturday. absolutely love it. it's good. except for that scene where cyclops & wolverine were holding each other in shock when they saw jean drown. i was shocked and sad when i saw jean drown but when the scene panned to cyclops and wolverine....i just did't feel devastated about jean's death when i watched them going through their grief. i didn't feel the sadness through them. maybe it's b/c i knew from the hints in the previous scenes that jean was coming back as phoenix (aka a red haze appeared when jean pushed her powers to their limit). dunno.

looking back at the movie, it seems like this one's just mostly action. i guess i feel this way since i read the book which has a completely different ending than the movie. the book delves a bit more into the wolverine-jean-cyclops triangle than the movie did. i'm guessing they're leaving that for the next movie, otherwise X2 would be way longer than 2 hours. =)

the X2 book....it's a bit too sappy for my taste. the language, that is. not the plot line. the author obviously is in love with some of the characters. but it's still an ok read. it's just, some of the lines and description....well, i would've expected them to come from a romance book. =)

next movie i'm looking forward to is, of course, Matrix Reloaded. =)

Children of Dune (tv series) used an imitation of the Matrix bullet scene method. the movie is good b/c of the complex intrigues going on. some of the effects are not bad also. but it's one of those movies where you don't really watch it for the effects, like Angel and Buffy. it's good for the story that it tells.
